exploring consciousness
issue eighteen

There are word lessons and there are world lessons. A word lesson is an effort to convey an experience via spoken or written symbols. A word lesson can be informative or enjoyable or inspiring. A word lesson is an expression of someone's belief. A word lesson can be a very nice thing, but it should not be confused with a world lesson.

A world lesson is something that you live through. It's something you encounter and deal with in life, and from the world lesson you emerge changed, more experienced, wiser. A world lesson is an experience. It does not require translation into symbols or sounds for you to remember it. It becomes part of what you know, of how you define yourself to yourself.

World Lessons

by Harry Palmer

They could look up every word and demonstrate the meaning of every sentence and still they might totally miss the experience of Avatar.

Now isn't that strange?photo of Egyptian statue

Let me tell you a parable. Long before there was anything even resembling culture in the West, there was a highly evolved civilization along the upper Nile in southern Egypt. It was an enlightened civilization governed by teacher-priests. The people were loving, compassionate, and skilled in social fellowship. They looked after each other. How did they achieve this highly evolved state while the rest of the world remained largely uncivilized barbarians?

The secret was their mystery school of Ra!

Ra originally meant source of consciousness. Only later did it become the hieroglyph for sun and the name of an Egyptian god. These people reached the pinnacle of civilization, not by technological brilliance, but through their ability to externalize from their reactive impulses and act in alignment with a collective consciousness. They shared experiences that purged them from any desire to do evil. They evolved out of selfish concerns into a broader perspective of life. The teachings and exercises that brought about these changes were contained in a sacred papyrus scroll that was only studied after the proper initiation by the teacher-priests of Ra.

photo of scroll The word initiation means an initial preparation for instruction. The ritual of an initiation conveys an experience. After you have had the experience, words can trigger deeper realizations and clarify the subtlety of the experience. The same words, without the experience, may be meaningless or lead to misinterpretations.

When the initiation ritual is performed correctly, it accomplishes two things: first it awakens a viewpoint that is more aware than one's habitual viewpoint, and second it bonds one into a strong fellowship with others who have also been awakened.

The love and safety of the fellowship assists in the removing of barriers to spiritual evolvement: delusion and prejudice, dishonesty and deception, dishonor and fraud.

So one day, an itinerant trader working the Nile learned about the sacred papyrus scroll. Finding it unguarded, he stole the scroll. Sometime later in his travels, he sold it to a pharaoh-king who ruled in the northern delta region of the Nile. So great was the scroll's rumored powers that the pharaoh's goldsmiths built a heavy gold chest, encrusted with precious stones, to hold the scroll of plundered wisdom.

Only the most privileged minds of the kingdom were permitted to study the scroll; they argued its meanings, and presented various and contradictory interpretations to the pharaoh.image of Ra

The Pharaoh, who was ambitious for power, turned the possession of the scroll into an opportunity. The interpretations became an intellectual foundation, the word lessons, for a new religion that declared Amon-Ra, the sun god, the personal defender of the Pharaoh. A great temple and a ten-meter tall statue of Amon-Ra were built: a god with the head of a hawk surrounded by the sun as a crown and bearing, in the crook of its muscular arm, the scepter of the Pharaoh. The people were ordered to sacrifice goats to insure the nation's good fortune. The souls of the goats were ceremonially assigned to Amon-Ra, the meat quietly found its way into the temple kitchen.

The religion of Amon-Ra was little more than a political tool. Its main body of religious scriptures consisted of explanations of the temple symbols and their meaning: Amon-Ra had the head of a hawk because hawks were known for their keen ability to see; the sun framed Ra because it was the symbol of beginning; the presence of the scepter showed that Amon-Ra and the Pharaoh were allied.

image of Egyptian army In the name of the new religion, the king recruited a powerful army and declared war upon any neighboring tribes who had not accepted Amon-Ra as their chief deity. In reality the Pharaoh was merely levying a tax on the neighboring tribes that he camouflaged as compulsory sacrifices to Amon-Ra. Finally, the Pharaoh, to cement his power, claimed to be the earthly incarnation of Amon-Ra. Temples of Osiris and Aten, older deities, were either destroyed or re-dedicated to Amon-Ra.

The harsh realities of power, cloaked in the mysteries of the spirit, would rule Egypt for over a thousand years.

And oh, by the way, the sacred scroll was misplaced, and the gold chest was hammered into a toenail for one of the many statues honoring the nation's Pharaoh-God, Amon-Ra. The precious stones found their way into the purses of wine merchants.

So that is what can happen when people are not properly prepared for spiritual instructions. Without the sincerity that is awakened by honest fellowship and initiation, people interpret new information to support their habitual intentions andimage of mind-labyrinth ideas. Instead of transforming, they shore up their prejudices with word lessons.

People underestimate the imprisoning ability of the mind. If spiritual awakening were possible within the habitual framework of thinking, all would have it; no external instruction would ever be necessary.

The Story of The Avatar Course

photo of Avatar studentsWhat do the Avatar Materials teach?

1. The ability to live and create deliberately
2. The knowledge that purges the desire to do evil
3. The power to face death unafraid

Extraordinary Moments

The materials are truly amazing and vital data for anyone seeking to understand consciousness, awareness, and how to operate freely in these areas. It's the greatest gift I think anyone could give themselves or another. And it's fun!

I've found that using these materials, especially secrets, hidden agendas, creations lists, the many fantastic rundowns, have shifted me not only into higher modes of consciousness much more stably, but have made me much happier, more connected to others, more real, more authentic, and much more aligned with creating an enlightened planetary civilization in a way that is natural and flowing.

I have great admiration for Harry, Avra, all the Trainers, and all the Star's Edge support staff. Hoo RAH! –R.S.

Dear Harry,

I am 10 years old. I came to Melbourne from New Zealand, and I have just finished Section 2 of the Avatar Course. I used to push my problems down, but now I have learnt to solve them and not push them away. My favorite DVD is, "Everything is Alright." I would love to be in a world as nice as Avatar people. –E.D.A.

Dear Harry, Avra, & Miken,

After completing the Integrity Mini Course at the Geelong International Course. I wanted to share with you all a moment of joy.

Firstly, I finally understood that it is honesty with oneself and others that leads to happiness and freedom. By clearing up my dis-honesty, I felt real and a freedom and excitement for life again.

I am going through another experience of cancer and at the end of the Integrity Mini Course, there is the Compassion Exercise, so I did it first for the cancer and then for my body.

From doing this exercise for the cancer, I felt such deep compassion for cancer. It was no longer an enemy to be conquered and resisted, (what you resist, persists). I then did the Compassion Exercise for my body and again a deep sense of compassion for it. All the anger and blame and criticism had gone and was replaced with an awe of wonder at its ability to heal.

Each day is a blessing and the most important thing for me is my spiritual unfoldment so that I may contribute to the creation of an Enlightened Planetary Civilization. I now realize that being in service is a gift to embrace and to do it NOW! Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. –R.B.
